End of the line?

In case you were wondering what happened after September 1 to cause no more rail images to be posted, a couple significant things changed. First I got really busy at work and didn't have time to head out taking pictures and second, I've decided to set aside railfanning for the time being and focus on other interests. I may take some pictures in Chesterton along the NS main line next spring during visits to my parents, but I'm skeptical there will be any more UP pictures from Geneva and West Chicago. Anyway, there won't be any more pictures for many months and I figured it would be best to share this so people can drop this RSS feed if they like. Since I need to keep my site around for other things and I am well within my bandwidth and storage quota, I see no reason to take down the rail images.

Rail Images from Geneva

Labor Day was a pretty luck day for me with quite a bit of traffic through Geneva. Although the first eastbounder passed by too early for a picture, I caught five more tains before it started to get too hot. The first two, UP 4229 East and UP 4605 East, are face shots of classic SD70Ms (no flags, no flares). After a Metra train passed by, I caught UP 8375 SD70ACe leading a stack train. And then I got pretty lucky. The westbound empty coal train used DPU and I shot UP 6264 C44ACCTE. Where I got lucky was moments later UP 7694 C45ACCTE crawled east just slow enough to give me a good shot. In fact, the shots of UP 6264 and UP 7694 were so close, Aperture couldn't split their stacks automatically. I have to thank LPJ02 taking too long to cross into the yard at West Chicago and making sure UP 7694 was forced to slow down waiting for a signal at Kres. I wouldn't have been able to get the picture otherwise.

Rail Images from Geneva

Although there are only three pictures from this morning (three eastbounds led by a C45ACCTE, UP 7668, and two SD70Ms, UP 4457 and UP 5151), there were quite a number of trains between Meredith and Proviso on the Geneva Sub. When I left, there were four freights parked west of Geneva, a Metra train in Elburn, another freight in West Chicago and at least two more between West Chicago and Proviso.

Rail Images from Geneva

I finally had some free time and a sunny day to take pictures. I headed over to Geneva and started the day off with a rail train led by UP 4559 SD70M. Later I caught another SD70M, UP 5228, leading a short stack train. The other two images are of C44ACCTEs (UP 5868 and UP 6052) trailing westbound coal trains.

Walking away from USENET to focus on rail.ktlx.net

My account with Giganews ends next week and after that I won't be posting any more pictures to alt.binaries.pictures.rail. My usenet use has fallen to those point where I'm mostly just posting images to this group and I decided to spend my money and time on my Web site and Trainorders.com. One of the biggest improvements I want to make to my site is improve the ability to search out images based on keywords. For example, I'd like to get to the point where someone could go to Google, restrict the search to rail.ktlx.net, use the keyword "SD70ACe" and find all my SD70ACe images. I know now to make that happen, I just need some time to implement it. I also purchased a new copy of Aperture 2 and I'm going to spend time learning that. I'm considering some of the available Web themes to revamp my site. Some of them are pretty slick.

Rail Images from Chesterton

Monday morning had a higher ratio of eastbounds to westbounds than Sunday. I again caught an ex-Conrail unit in the lead and what appears to be a motive power balancing move with five units on a train that only needed two or three.

Rail Images from Chesterton

I finally got a chance to take a trip over to Chesterton this year to railfan the Norfolk Southern. The day started off with a couple eastbound TOFC trains right at first light. There were a bunch of westbounds this morning. I also caught a CP AC4400CW pretending to be an Alco.

Rail Image from West Chicago

Due to a snafu with the computers in Omaha, I was only able to catch a single train before things stopped. It's a plain old C44AC–no wings and no flags.

Rail Images from West Chicago and Geneva

I headed over to West Chicago and caught UP 5736 two bites into my McSkillet burrito. Then things pretty much died until UP 7801 came up on me and I didn't get in the correct location. I headed over to Geneva to catch the rest of the action but I only liked the picture of the last coal train before I left.

Rail Images from West Chicago and Eola

I headed over to West Chicago and caught UP 8505 SD70ACe while the sun still shone. The Belvedere sub job had both Olympic units on the point, so I grabbed a shot of UP 2001 too. On my way home, I was able to get a shot of a BNSF SD70ACe in Eola before the clouds completely took over.

Rail Images from Geneva

I took advantage of the beautiful morning and headed over to Geneva. The lighting wasn't the best, so I just took "face shots". I did get all winged units and there is a C45ACCTE, an SD70ACe, an SD70M (UP 4000 itself) and a C44ACCTE on a coal train.

Rail Images from Eola

I headed over to Eola to kill some time but not a whole lot was going on. I did catch BNSF 7692 parked, waiting to head to Galesburg, so I got a shot of an ES44DC in Heritage II paint. I also decided to include a shot of BNSF 1041 West. It is a typical Z train with three DASH9-44CWs on point.

I took a chance the weather was wrong and was rewarded. The day started off with a shiny, new UP 7919 C45ACCTE in West Chicago and ended with an NS 2663 SD70M-2 in Eola. All in all, a good day!

Rail Images from Eola

The rains passed through and the skies cleared up so I took a short trip to Eola. I saw the Illinois Railnet train, a coal train led by BNSF 9535 with the wedgie logo and the ugliest locomotive ever: an Amtrak P42DC.
